Iskander Mirza did not allow a National Assembly
to be formed under the constitution of 1956, assumed
power and by Proclamation dated 7th October, 1958,
abrogated the constitution, dissolved the National
and
Provincial
Assemblies,
imposed
Martial
Law
throughout the country and General Muhammad Ayub Khan
was
appointed
as
Commander-in-Chief
and
Chief-
Martial-Law Administrator. Iskander Mirza ultimately
could
not
retain
power
and
he
was
overthrown
by
Muhammad Ayub Khan and the country was put under
Martial
Law.
